Historic shield of a teutonic knight. The order dates back to 1190 when it was founded by citizens of Bremen and Luebeck (Germany) outside Akkon/Akko in Jerusalem. The order was founded as a hospital and changed in 1198 into an armored brotherhood of knights / monks (they were both). They carried the black cross on white ground on shields and cloaks / surcoats. Together with the knights templar (red cross on white ground) and the Hospitallers (white cross on black ground) they were the three greatest orders in medieval times.
